Koenigsmann (Oxford) On Poonen's definition of Z in Q
The question whether Z is diophantine in Q (i.e. first-order definable
in Q by an existential formula) has been asked ever since
Matiyasevich's negative solution to Hilbert's 10th problem over Z in
1970. If the answer is yes, then Hilbert's 10th problem over Q has a
negative solution as well.
We will present the key steps in the proof of Poonen's recent
∀∃-formula for Z in Q. We will then give an alternative
almost universal formula for Z in Q, leading to a simple criterion for
the existential resp. universal definability of Z in Q.
14h : Jérôme Poineau (Strasbourg) La droite de Berkovich sur
Z

Singer (NCSU).
14h : Margarita Otero (UA Madrid) Homotopy of groups definable in
o-minimal structures
Let G be a definably compact group definable in o-minimal expansions of
real closed field. It is known that G is an extension of a compact Lie
group $L$ by a divisible torsion-free normal subgroup. We show that the
o-minimal (higher) homotopy groups of $G$ are isomorphic to the
corresponding (higher) homotopy groups of $L$. As a consequence, we obtain
that all abelian definably compact groups of a given dimension are
definably homotopy equivalent, and that their universal cover are
contractible.

:
11h : Raf Cluckers (Leuven) Lipschitz continuity properties for p-adic definable functions.
In general, a function f between normed spaces is said to be Lipschitz
continuous with constant C when for every x,y in the domain one has
| f (x) - f (y) | \leq C | x - y |.
On the reals, K. Kurdyka proved that a real subanalytic function with
bounded partial derivatives is piecewise Lipschitz continuous with some
constant C, where the pieces are subanalytic. Most of the techniques
used by Kurdyka break down in the p-adics, like paths, path integrals,
the idea of the length of a path, the description of the length as an
integral, the mean value theorem, and so on, in part by the total
discontinuity of the p-adics. On the other hand, definable functions in
the p-adics are of course defined using only a finite amount of data,
hence there can be no behaviour of infinite oscillation or of infinitely
many "jumps", and thus, intuitively, Kurdyka's result should hold for
the p-adics too. We will discuss recent results in the p-adic
situation, which is joint work with G. Comte and F. Loeser, and compare
it to Kurdyka's approach in the reals.
16h : Julia Hartmann (Aachen) Applications of Patching
Patching methods - building a global object by constructing it locally -
have been used in various contexts, in particular, in inverse Galois theory.
This talk explains the method of patching over fields which was recently
developed in joint work with D. Harbater to attack inverse problems in
differential Galois theory. Using patching, we obtain a local global
principle for certain homogeneous spaces, which in turn gives results about
quadratic forms and central simple algebras.

14h : Laurent Moret-Bailly (Rennes I) Indécidabilité diophantienne d'anneaux de fonctions en caractéristique
nulle.
16h : Marcus Tressl (Manchester) Elementary properties of rings of semi-algebraic functions.
The Gelfand-Kolmogorov theorem implies that the homeomorphism type
of a Lindelöf space X (e.g. any subset of the euclidean space) is uniquely
determined by its ring C(X) of continuous real valued functions.
In fact X can easily be reconstructed from the pure ring C(X).
Thus, Lindelöf spaces can be studied with
algebraic and model theoretic tools for commutative rings.
An old theorem of A. Grzegorczyk implies that these rings are undecidable
if X is not discrete; G. Cherlin later demonstrated how to
define the integers and to interpret second order Peano arithmetic in C(X).
I will have a look into the situation where all data are given
algebraically: Let R be a real closed field (for example the real field)
and let X be a subset of R^n which is semi-algebraic, i.e. X is a boolean combination of polynomial inequalities f>= 0.
Let C_{alg}(X) be the ring of all continuous functions X->R, which are semi-algebraic (i.e. have semi-algebraic graph).
Then again, X can be easily reconstructed from C_{alg}(X) but it is
an open question whether C_{alg}(X) is decidable (if X is of dimension 1).
I will show in the case of archimedean R, (e.g. if R is the real field)
that all topological information of X is encoded already in the elementary theory of the ring C_{alg}(X), this means:
If Y is another s.a. subset of R^k for some k,
which is not semi-algebraic homeomorphic
to X, then there is a first order sentence in the language of commutative rings,
without parameters, which holds true in the ring C_{alg}(X) and which fails in C_{alg}(Y) (and such a sentence can be effectively produced).
I will also indicate that
a. the rings C_{alg}(X) for infinite X are first order distinguishable from every ring of continuous functions on Lindelöf spaces.
b. If X is of dimension at least 2 and R is the field of real algebraic numbers then C_{alg}(X) is first order distinguishable from the ring
C_{alg}(Y), where the latter ring is formed over the real field and Y is the base change of X to the real field. I.e. these rings can distinguish their coefficient fields in a first order way.

(Savoie), Expansion of the real field by Cantor sets:
definability versus interpretability
(joint work with H. Friedman, Ch. Miller and P. Speissegger)
We show that there exists a Cantor set K such that (R,+,., K) -
the expansion of the field of reals by K, defines a Borel isomorph
of (R,+,., N). Moreover for every exponentially bounded o-minimal expansion of
of the field of reals M every unary definable set in (M,K) has interior or
has Hausdorff dimension zero. The main ingredients are geometric measure theory and
metric properties of sets definable in o-minimal structure.
14h : J. Demeyer
(Gand), Diophantine sets of polynomials over number fields
Let R be a recursive subring of a number field and consider the polynomial ring
R[T]. We will show that the set of polynomials with integer coefficients is
diophantine (existentially definable) in R[T].
Applying a result by Denef, this implies that every recursively enumerable subset
of R[T] is diophantine.
16h :
A. Wilkie (Manchester), Model theory and analytic continuation
for implicitly defined functions.
It is clear that if K is a subfield of the complex field and f(z) is an analytic
function germ which is algebraic over K(z), then f may be analytically continued along
any path which avoids all points in the algebraic closure of K. (We are mainly
interested in the case that K is countable, so most paths have this property.) I
discuss the situation for function germs f(z) satisfying certain transcendental
equations (eg exponential polynomial equations). The methods are model theoretic.
I shall then give some applications to definabilty theory for expansions of the
complex field by certain analytic functions.

(Leeds) First order theories without the independence property.
I will talk about first order theories without the independence property.
The talk is aimed towards a general audience (i.e. people not necessarily acquainted
with the technical aspects of stability). Examples of first order theories without
the independence property, are (theories of) real closed fields, p-adically closed
fields, algebraically closed valued fields, the ordered additive group of the
integers. I will concentrate on ways in which the typical behaviour of definability
in stable theories generalizes in interesting ways to theories without the
independence property.

Dans la théorie des corps valués algébriquement

types dans une théorie
stable. Dans ces deux exposés nous présenterons nos

espaces de types :
nature pro-définissable, propriétés de topologie
